Go Karting!
by Shaina

I'm 15 and I've been racing Go-Karts for three years and have won two season Championships. My first season out I got 2nd by one point. I race at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, Washington during the winter. Here is a little tidbit of something that happened my first season of racing.

We finally arrived at the fairgrounds after a two hour drive, after unloading my kart and the tools from the back of our truck I got my gear ready while my dad got my kart ready and went out for some practice laps. My kart is an 85 Invader funkart chassis with a funkart motor. I now have a 75' margay racing chassis with a Briggs and Stratton Blue Wazoom motor that runs on Methanol. Best motor out there in my opinion! After coming back in and deciding all was well I went off in search of my friends to see if our positions for our heat races had been posted yet. Lucky me I was starting in the back, again.

Out on the track we all got lined up in our positions, going around once more to take the green flag. Seeing the flash of the green I floored the gas pedal and took off, passing three karts by the end of the first corner. All was going well, I had worked up to first place and was starting to get into lapped traffic. Then it happened. The only other girl in the class, also my friend, had spun out and turned down to the bottom of the track where I was running. I turned up, hoping to avoid her and almost made it but my rear tire went over her tire, leg, and steering wheel, 6 feet into the air and started spinning (as my dad would say "doing helicopters"). It spun around about 5 times, with me screaming the whole way. Flashes of the green doors and the red stand where the ladies in the office count laps and keep track of where the people finish spinning in front of my eyes. The kart tilting to the left and to the right, "Its gonna flip!" I thought. But it didn't. It came back down and landed on the tires, and bounced me right back up into the air again. I spun three times this time and came back down and floored it. I won the race, but needless to say I don't ever run the inside of any track anymore.
