Love For Sale
by L.A. Thompson
Oh my heart, the day we met
Was an enchanted day I won't forget.
Love at first sight had never been true,
Until my eyes did settle on you.
My mind was aware of your obvious flaws,
But my heart immediately took up your cause.
Try as friends did to reason with me,
Love made me blind so I could not see.
And so began our troubled affair-
Doubts pushed aside, on without care.
Of course problems came up, but we worked them out
These kinds of relationships are always about
Ups and downs and give and take
Besides drama does often a good story make.
Years passed by and you wore them well,
But your spirits were low and I could tell.
So I gave words of encouragement and coaxed you along,
And sometimes I pushed- I really had to be strong.
Through it all I loved you and will for all my days,
But it became quite clear that it was time to part our ways.
You quickly found a new love and to him I said "just take her."
And with tears in my eyes I said good-bye to my beloved Studebaker.
I wrote this poem after selling my 1964 Studebaker Daytona. "Max" was
green on green original and I still squeal with delight when I see a
Studebaker on the road. She was my first love of this kind and I
secretly hope to be reunited someday!
