TowGrrl! TowGrrl
by Peggy "TowGrrl" Treuber

I have been driving tow trucks for about 2 years now and I just love it! Everyday is different - I do accidents, lockouts, tire changes, jumpstarts and light and medium duty towing. I am dispatched to many auto club customers, police calls, and border patrol calls. I meet all kinds of people - many are surprised to see a woman tow truck driver and some are skeptical but I know how to do my job and do it well so the doubts soon turn to respect. I know that I have to do my job better than my fellow (men) tow truck drivers because people look for mistakes when they otherwise wouldn't, but I don't mind because I enjoy my job and learning more about it. The most difficult part of the job, but also the most exciting and challenging, is the accident recoveries. When I arrive at the accident scene it is my responsibility to develop a plan to get the accident site cleaned up in a safe manner and in a short amount of time. I depend on quick thinking and common sense to get the job done.

Limo The pay is good, most tow companies pay a percentage. The shifts can be long and you are on call 24 hrs a day in most cases. When the weather is bad you still have to go to work and it is usually even busier. People get their vehicles stuck in the mud, slide off the road, break down, and get in more accidents when the weather is bad. Sometimes the job can be dangerous and I have to watch out not only for myself but my customers as well.

Van Some people might think I would get a lot of guff from other tow truck drivers but nothing is farther from the truth - I have not met one guy who treated me badly - as a matter of fact they are all very supportive. Another thing I like about the towing industry is the camaraderie between all tow truck drivers, when you are driving and pass another tow truck you wave or give a flash of your rotater lights - that's just what we do. If a tow truck driver is hurt the message goes out and towmen (and chicks) from all over the world send donations and cards. When there is a funeral, towman - with their tow trucks - come from all over to pay their respects. I also know that if I am ever in a situation and need help I can count on any tow truck driver from any tow company to help - and they can count on me!

All the trucks! Now let me talk about the trucks! I love them! Every year there is a big tow truck beauty show - talk about nice trucks. I plan to enter one I helped fix up next year. The trucks I drive now are nice too. If I could have any tow truck it would have to be a 1998-2000 International with a shark roll back bed. It would be black with lightning bolts.

Well as you can tell I am enjoying myself being a tow chick!! If you have any other questions I'll be happy to reply!
